Martha Daniels - Ceramics

Martha Daniels’ May 2000 solo exhibition at the Denver Art Museum introduced the most adventurous and compelling ceramic sculpture that has ever been seen in the region. This work comprises hand-built sculptural and architectural forms of monumental scale. Their surfaces are richly glazed and painted, utilizing everything from traditional maiolica to lacquer, metal, and nail polish.

A true vanguard artist, breaking with traditional clay forms, she is one of the most influential contemporary ceramists working in the Rocky Mountain region today.  Her work has also been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in many major public and private collections.
“The overall purpose of my work is to present a universal language of symbol, metaphor, and theme in the medium of ceramic sculpture. This is accomplished through unification of intellectual and sensual perceptions in clay”, says Daniels.

These magnificent structures, as much architectural as they are sculptural, have to count among the most original, stunning, and technically sophisticated creations in the contemporary ceramics world today.”  Kyle Macmillan, Denver Post Art Critic

“Martha Daniels’ ‘GROTTO’ was one of the best shows we’ve ever put on.”
Dianne Vanderlip, Director, Contemporary Art Department, The Denver Art Museum.

“Ceramically speaking, your work is unique.”  Dr. Donald Kuspit.
