“A Thorn in My Side”

 Sandra Kaplan’s new body of work explores themes of beauty, perseverance, humor and growth through painting on
paper in watercolor and acrylic pigment. These ethereal, fantastical cactii are
voluptuous, taking pictorial cues from old-master, romantic, and impressionist
traditions, Kaplan broadens and challenges their conventions, adding decidedly
contemporary colors, and forms to the traditional genres of landscape
paintings.
